Recently we got our first Apple LaserWriter. While waiting for our TranScript software we have written a terminal description for nroff to simulate an older writer we have. We were using the Courier font, but thought the letters turned out to skinny on the right edge of the paper, like they weren't "exposed" as much as the rest of the text. I made a test-page, to see if the print density was even. Just send the small program initclip newpath clippath 0.6 setgray fill showpage to the LaserWriter, and you should get a page with an even medium gray tone all the way to the edges (almost), completely even. I didn't. The center area on the paper was rather even, but the edges were noticeably lighter. On the left, the lighter area extended into about one inch from the paper-edge. On the right, the lighter area extended into about three quarters of an inch from the paper-edge. (I am using a4 paper, 8.27in x 11.69in). Suspecting something was wrong, I went to my dealer. I made my test page on his LaserWriter, and got the same result! What is this? Have we gotten cartridges from a bad shipment, or do we both have defect LaserWriters, or, heaven forbid, are the LaserWriter designed to behave this way? "They normally print only in the center of the page, it doesn't matter if the density falls of at the edges, as long as it is even in the center"?
