Palo Alto, CA (3 March 1987) -- Adobe Systems Incorporated has announced the signing of a contract with International Business Machines (IBM). Under the terms of the contract, IBM will have licensing rights to PostScript, the page description language interpreter developed by Adobe Systems. A simultaneous announcement was made today by Jeff Mason, General Manager of IBM's Publishing Systems Business Unit during his keynote speech at the Corporate Electronic Publishing Systems Conference (CEPS tm) in Chicago, Illinois. "Major computer, printer, and typesetting manufacturers have adopted PostScript as their device independent page description language," said Dr. Charles Geschke, executive vice-president, Chief Operating Officer and co-founder of Adobe Systems. "To say we are pleased with this announcement is an understatement," continued Geschke. IBM, the world's largest manufacturer of personal and mainframe computers, plans to use PostScript as one of the key foundation elements of their preferred environments for IBM electronic publishing products. "PostScript will play a significant role along with other IBM architectures in raising the level of document communication in all levels of corporate and commercial publishing," said Jeff Mason, General Manager, IBM Publishing Business Unit. Other major computer, printer, and typesetting manufacturers using PostScript include Agfa-Gevaert, Apollo Computer, Apple Computer, Dataproducts, Diconix, Digital Equipment Corporation, ITT Qume, The Laser Connection, Linotype Company, NBI, NEC Information Systems, QMS, Sun Microsystems, Texas Instruments and Wang Laboratories. Over 200 software publishers also support PostScript including major industry players such as Microsoft Corporation, WordPerfect Corporation, MicroPro International, Lotus Development Coporation, Letraset and Aldus Corporation. In all, there are over 300 PostScript-based application programs for both the IBM PC and the Macintosh environments that currently drive the wide range of available PostScript printers. In addition to marketing PostScript to OEMs, Adobe also markets its downloadable Type Library and its most recent product, the Adobe Illustrator, a second generation graphics software program for the production of high-quality line art and illustrations.
