[mod.computers.laser-printers] war stories wanted

ken@CS.ROCHESTER.EDU (SKY) (03/07/87)

I'm appealing to the collective intelligence of this mailing list to
help provide us with information to decide on a laser printer.

We have pretty much decided on a Postscript printer. These are the some
of the contenders:

	Apple Laserwriter
	QMS PS800
	Dataproducts 2660

Some specific questions: can the QMS print at the rated 8 ppm ordinary
TeX or troff output? Why else would you prefer a QMS over the
Laserwriter? Does it also do bitmaps faster than the Laserwriter? Do
you have any bottlenecks with the 9600 baud line?

Does the Dataproducts 2660 print at the rated speed? It was suggested
that Postscript is a common bottleneck. Anybody have experience with
the Agfa 406 dpi machine?

What is your average yield from a Canon LBP-CX (Laserwriter)
cartridge? 3000-4000 is suggested as good, but someone quoted 8000. Is
that unrealistic?

Do you have any suggestions for other printers? If you like a printer
do tell me why but if you have war stories, I will be all ears.

Please mail to me, I'm not on this list. I will summarize. Thanks in
advance.
