Yesterday my laser died. It came back to life when we changed the roms. I pass this along in case someone has a similar problem (althogh somehow I doubt that will occur). We had (have?) a LaserWriter that was shortly followed by the Plus upgrade. We installed the upgrade but removed it when ptroff stopped making tbl boxes correctly. Yesterday the laser stopped responding and flashed its processing light til I cycled the power. When the self-test flashing stopped no test page came out. However it starting sending bursts of nuls on the 9600 port. Also the test led started flashing. Our service people put the Plus upgrade back in and now it's fine. We have switched to ditroff and the tbl box problem is gone as well. However, now when I run dvi2ps and it has to substitutes fonts some chars no longer print, some print as blanks and some become some other character.
