[mod.computers.laser-printers] Toner cartridges

joyce%isieng@isieng.UUCP.UUCP (03/12/87)

I'm trying to locate someone who either purchases or refills empty
toner cartridges for the Apple LaserWriter. Rumor has it that such
a person exists. If you know anything about this, I'd like to hear
from you. Also, if you have any first-hand experience with using
second-hand cartridges, I'd like to get your opinion on readability
and reliability of the cartridges. Thanks in advance.

There are instructions in the February 1987 Computer Shopper "Ask the Guru"
column by Don Lancaster (the Betty Crocker of electronics, I guess -- he's
written several "cookbooks"), pages 97, 98 and 196. He says, "It is
definitely not feasible to ship refilled cartridges except by hand carrying."

If you can't find the February Computer Shopper, you can buy a complete set
of reprints of "Ask the Guru" for $21.50 from:
  Synergetics
  Box 809
  Thatcher AZ 85552
     (602)428-4073

The article includes sources for tools and toner, but no source for refilled
cartridges or buyer of used cartridges.

DISCLAIMER: I have no connection with Don Lancaster, except as a reader of
	     some of his books.

Try American Ink Products Company 527 Howard St. San Francisco 982-0161
This amazing little company has cheap printer ribbons for almost anything and
reinks old ribbons. One of their newest projects is refilling laser toner
cartridges for the Cannon engine (used in Apple LaserWriter) give them a call.

as to the durability and reliability of refilled cartridges, that I do not know
but we'd appreciate hearing about your experience
if you do use a refilled cartridge. Let us know on this BBS, will you??

[[Editor's note: The durability of refilled cartridges is something
we have discussed in great length in the past. My recollection of
what was said then was that they seem to work but they are not
necessarily up to 100% of the new ones. I would suggest that you send
any comments you might have directly to the author of this message and
ask him to please post a summary to the list if he learns anything
interesting. --Rick ]]

I've had one cartridge refilled (actually that's not quite true, the cart
sent to me isn't the same one as the one I sent them), and I've been quite
happy with it. The company that did the refill runs a test print off of
the cart and sends it to you. The cart is overfilled by about 10%, meaning
that there's 10% more toner in it. Print quality is good; not as good as
a new, broken-in cart, but good. I use it for everything but final copy
for printing (I even use it for letters).

The company is Michlin Computer Consultants, and their # is 313-747-0840.
I don't have their address handy...
