[mod.computers.apollo] 20 questions

burati@ULOWELL.CSNET (Michael Burati) (02/19/86)

I've got several questions/problems here that have been haunting me,
can anybody help?

1)
We have our VAX 11/750's talking to our apollos through ethernet
with virtually no major problems, but:

	a) Every so often, (ie >=24 hrs) the apollo side decides to go
to sleep. The node stays up, "rwhod, rlogind, telnetd,
tcp_server" all stay running, but the 750's both say that
the apollo net is down. Rlogin then won't work from either
direction. Killing the servers and restarting them doesn't
work, but shutting down the node and rebooting does.

	b) I can rlogin from any node to the gateway node, but not from
one node to another non-gateway (Connection refused). Do I
have to have rlogind running on every node? Also, when
I try to log in from a non-gateway node, I get (rlogind:
Hostname for your address "192.9.10.7" unknown). Do the
two vaxes both have to know about every apollo node, or just
the gateway? (NOTE: if I rlogin to the gateway first, then
	   I can rlogin from there to a 750, but that's a pain).

	c) Using 'printcap' on the Vax's, we can specify devices as
remote, thus allowing printers to be shared over ethernet.
I realize that there is no 'printcap' or 'lpr' in domain/ix
yet and that Apollo may include it in future revisions, but
is there any reliable way to do this now?

2)
UUCP over a serial line also works great between the apollo net and our
vax; copying files works, uucp mail works ... UUX does not work.

We have the uucp software set up on the VAX to let anybody use
the 'lpr' command, and it does work from one VAX to the other.

When I try to use (uux ulowell\!lpr filename) from our apollos to
the vax,(ulowell) it queues up fine, sends the request fine, but returns
the error (uuxqt: cmd lpr failed. signal 0, status 1). Looking at the
log file, every thing else looks fine (it exported the path ...) but I
always get the same error. What's happening?

3
Lately I have been trying to install some Un*x PD software that we have on
our vax (running ULTRIX-32) on our apollo net. These are some problems that
I have encountered.

ckermit	- encounters syntax errors in a few modules (incompatible types)

pathalias - Ran, but returned 'Bus Error' (Note I have a fix for this from
					Jim Rees at Apollo).

uumail - encounters syntax errors in uumail.c (incompatible types)

bm - Runs fine, but gave several warnings when compiling.

It's nice to be able to use Public Domain utilities that are available.
If anybody has found solutions to these and other related problems,
it would be nice if the rest of us could be able to benefit from them.

Posting all the fixes may be a problem, but if you have answers and would
like to send them to me, I would be glas to summarize what I received to
the net and send out the individual fixes to those who request them.

Thanks in advance.

ps Is there a way to use UUCP over ethernet instead of the serial line?
(It just occurred to me, I haven't looked into it yet.)
