I was wondering if anybody else noticed any changes/new problems with the sr9.2.3 /com/prsvr (print server). I just recently updated our net from 9.0 and had been using a qms ps-800 laser printer with absolutely no problems, by telling the print server that I was using APPLE as a driver. (BTW, the qms ps800 is Laserwriter/Appletalk compatible if used with a 9 pin cable) I had just put the printer in standard 9600 baud... postscript mode, which is not the apple compatible mode, and started the server. I was able to print '-plot' files and '-text' files without problems. Now here's the problem. With the new print server, they (apollo) have added a check at startup time to see if the printer is a Laserwriter, which inevitably causes the server to die, since the qms isn't in Laserwriter compatibility mode. (I'm using plain postscript mode instead of Appletalk mode, because Appletalk needs a 9pin connector, whereas Postscript mode can use the standard 25 pin serial line). Why would apollo change a working utility and make it less compatible/usable? (I got around the problem by saving a copy of the sr9.0 prsvr under a different name). ================ We (U. of Lowell) have been using a Cipher 6250 tape drive with Ciprico controller for about 6 months with absolutely no problems. I don't have the info right now, but I believe that the drive is much faster (and less expensive) than the supported CDC drive (I'm not sure about the Kennedy drive). ================ Michael Burati University of Lowell Computer Science Dept.
