[mod.computers.apollo] Splitting apollo net in two?

BURATI@ulowell.CSNET.UUCP (07/25/86)

Within the next month, the Computer Science dept
here at Univ of Lowell will be moving to a new building
(many times the size of the present one). Unfortunately,
the new building is to far away (and over the Merrimack
river) to run coax from the present net. This means
that we will have two apollo nets, one that we're are
leaving here (EE, ME, Research center) and the one
we are taking with us (20 nodes, 10 nodes respectively).
At the moment, the way we intend on communicating between
the nets is with ethernet (being transferred to a broad-
band line that runs across the river). (Anything like
fibre-optics would be too expensive, seeing that the
net we are leaving behind may move to the new area within
a few years).

Has anybody had any experience separating a network
into smaller nets, this is what I plan on having to deal
with so far.

1)	Making one of the alternate registries on the net
that we're leaving into a master registry.

2)	Making one of the nodes on the net into the head
	domain/ix site (/etc,/usr/spool,uucp...)

3)	Making sure that software used from CS nodes is on
the other nodes now and moving links to the new
	locations.

Is there any other problems that I should be aware of?
Does it sound possible to be able to install software/do
backups over the ethernet, since I will still be the only
Network admin, uucp admin, ethernet admin... for the apollo
net, and running back and forth between the nets could
cut down on the amount of time that I can spend keeping
them running.

When I make one of the nodes in the net the new
domain/ix site node, should I reinstall domain/ix with
the original install_sysadmin procedure, or can I just
copy the /etc,/usr/spool,/usr/lib/uucp... software
(to avoid messing up the domain/ix software that is
presently on that node).

Thanks in advance for any help.
