To rid yourself of new messages that really aren't there, type READ/NEW at the MAIL> prompt. This will most likely tell you that there are no new messages, but it will also fix the counter for you. ~Rob

Thanks to Rob Rimbold for an easy solution to the problem (READ/NEW). Here's an additional hint: The false new mail message usually is a result of a user deleting their MAIL.MAI file after receiving new mail. The READ/NEW fix does not work unless the user has a MAIL.MAI file. So if a user deletes their MAIL.MAI file and reports the problem, tell them to 1) send a mail message to themselves (MAIL NL: JRANDOM), and 2) type MAIL and READ/NEW -- Ed
