The story I heard why the screen manager routines were not used in TPU was that going through the SMG$ routines would slow down the editor, so they wrote routines specifically for ANSII terminals. The question that then pops up is why they can't modify TPU so that it would use SMG$ routines for non-ANSII terminals, while using the specially written routines for the ANSII terminals? By the way, I wonder how many people are actually using TPU rather than EDT now (or EMACS!). (P.s. I find it much slower in starting up. One of the few advantages it has over EDT that I find very useful is it's ability to look at a shared open file.)

I use tpu and I think it's great. I haven't had time to put in all the nifty features I want in an editor, but at the moment I am running my own custom editor (not a modified edt, but hand built from scratch) and I love it. When I get time, I intend to add multi window stuff and a few more sophisticated things. I already have generic comment blocks with fill in the blank capability.
