We upgraded a uVAX-I to a uVAX-II using DEC's upgrade kit. Our major grief was getting VMS up and running on the 10Mbyte disk. We soon decided that 1Mbyte RAM was insufficient and decided to expand. DEC's prices were absurd ($14,000 for a 4Mbyte board) and we had experienced very good results with Trendata (Standard Memories Inc.) for our other VAXen. We bought one of their 4Mbyte uVAX-II boards (only $1995!!!) and it seems to work just fine. As soon as our 71 Mbyte RD53 disk drive comes in, we will have quite a processor in a 5-1/4 inch box.
