[mod.computers.vax] Bitmap errors on RA81

Staff.Dobkin@NYU20 (Daniel B Dobkin) (11/27/85)

We've been having a problem lately with our user disk: every couple of days or
so, SHOW DEVICE/FULL shows "allocation disabled due to error on bitmap",
effectively write-locking the disk until we run DISKQUOTA and REBUILD.

Field Service has replaced everything on that drive except the power supply,
but the problem still occurs. At first we thought it might be due to disk
fragmentation (please don't get me started), but since we completely rebuilt
the structure on a shiny new HDA Sunday afternoon and the disk write-locked
itself early Monday morning we can safely rule that out. We've also been able
to eliminate the UDA50 as a possible culprit. Our next step will be to try
moving the user structure to another drive, and see if the problem moves.

Has anyone seen this, or have any clues as to what might be going on? Any and
all ideas gratefully accepted....

You can generally rule out a software problem if there are entries in the
error log indicating disk or controller errors. Do an ANALYZE/ERROR/BRIEF
and look for suspicious errors.
