[mod.computers.vax] VAX/VMS 4.x performance

SYSMSH@ULKYVX.BITNET (12/19/85)

Hello!

Something that you may want to check out if you are still having
performance problems with VMS 4.x is the SET VOLUME /ACCESSED=
and SET VOLUME /WINDOWS= commands. I'm not sure exactly how much
this actually has to do with the file system performance, but it
is particularly disturbing to look at the default values for these
parameters if you are running a bigger VAX with a lot of users.
It does seem to make a difference here on the 8600. I usually do
a command like this for my disks:

 $ set volume hsc000$dua0: /nohigh/access=32/window=64

Well I sort of took the defaults and multiplied them by 10! This
seems to result in file system performance gain that gets you back
where you were when you were running 3.7.
