Hi,
It's the infamous Masked Pollster here, ready to once again regale
you with an update on the poll and a question about the poll's future.
A month ago i went on holiday far away from terminals leaving
behind (i thought) the most recent update and a complete list of all
the books so far voted for. That article also included a question to
the net on the possible future of the poll. The article was truly
humongous and -judging by the response (zero)- apparently did not make
it past the gateway, so i'm submitting it again together with the most
recent update and the complete list. So far 105 people have responded
and the List contains upwards of 1300 books. I'll be winding the poll
down at the end of August (this is the 1st) so get those votes in soon.
Greg.
ps thanks to all of you who responded with bug reports and clarifications
and an especial vote of thanks to Andrew Sigel <packard!csnet-relay.arpa!
sigel%umass-cs.csnet> for a putting in a lot of effort to get the series
listings into shape (i had already done most of it but he didn't know that).
Thanks All :-) :-) :-)
-----------------------
Here are the top 20 (give or take a few - my software is not terribly
good with series votes). Interestingly, i find myself in agreement
with all of the top 100 or so (i wouldn't order them in the same way
though - and no, i didn't fix the election).

Here is the first part of the previous (lost?) posting.
Subject: SF Poll II - The Man Page! "Best" 300. Complete List. see inside.
Newsgroups: net.sf-lovers
Distribution: net
Hi. I started this Poll a month ago little suspecting how much work
was involved (fortunately!). When i started the List it grew basically
as linear function of the recommendations. However that soon changed as
many people started recommending series that i'd never heard of. This
necessitated library and bookstore scouting. In the process it struck me
that it would be stupid to just go dig up one particular work by an author
since almost invariably someone else would recommend some other work by
the same author (Anthony is probably the worst offender). So what i started
doing last week was whenever i met a book i didn't know i'd add as many
books by the same author as i could track down. Then i started thinking
wouldn't it be nice to have online access to all this information?
We'd no longer have queries like "....what else has s/he written" and
the subsequent 139 replies all saying the same thing.
Also:
-we could have yearly votes on "best" books, keeping cumulative
totals as well, so that after 4 years, say, the top 100 would
really be (a good approximation of) "the top 100". This would
be a really useful tool for all sorts of people, people just
looking for something new to read, completist (like me :-),
and (believe it or not) bookstores.
-we might have a "man page" for Heinlein (for example)
ideally, i'd like to have as much information as is necessary to
know which books are recommended, what other books that author
has written, the publisher, publication date, publisher's
address etc. and what (if any) major awards this book has won.
It's unclear how this is to be paid for however. Perhaps we could
have a species of moderator who you mail with some keyword in the
header and request information. We might get really fancy and have it
all done automagically. Of course with Evelyn Leeper and Jerry Boyajian
on the net this may be sort of redundant.....
What do you think? Since i'm on holiday as of tomorrow (far away
from any terminals alas) this will have to be opened to net discussion.
Make up your minds and i'll see you in a month.
Greg.
========================================================================
Here is the full List as it stands right now - i'd appreciate any
"bug reports" - misspellings/misdatings/misclassifications/inaccuracies etc.
Also any hugos nebulas or other major awards the work has garnered and
any vital statistics on the authors. Thanks bunches!
Some Explanation of cryptic symbols:
nee - born - meaning "normal name" (eg see Anthony or Wyndham)
as - meaning the work was written under a pseudonym and it is... (see Kuttner)
/ - the previous name is a shortening or a made up name for the following
(eg see Niven or Norton etc)
also in series - part of the logical work but either too new or not yet
published or most people didn't like it (eg see Douglas Adams and Asimov)
aka - also known as - meaning that the work has appeared under alternate
titles (usually retitled for UK (or US) version or if from an earlier
set of stories in the magazines etc.) (eg see Bester, Clarke etc)
col - this work is a collection of short stories by the author
ed - this work is a collection of short stories edited by the author
trans - the author was only the translator of the work cited
Hugo - this work won a Hugo
Nebula - this work won a Nebula
JWC - this work won a John W. Campbell Award
BFA - this work won the British Fantasy Award
ADFA=BFA - this work won the BFA prior to 1976 (it used to be called the
August Derleth Fantasy Award)
WFA - this work won the World Fantasy Award
The numbers in round brackets after a book title is the book's vote,
if only one person voted for the book then the "(1)" is ommitted.
Note that series have votes and parts of series (typically the first
book) also have votes, this means that the parts should have the
entire series vote added to their respective votes (eg the Hitch
Hiker's Guide should really have a vote of 16 since 8 people voted for
it directly and 8 people voted for the entire series)

Since I'm on holiday as of tomorrow (far away from any >terminals alas) this will have to be opened to net discussion. 1) It would be interesting - if not useful - to have online access to a bibliographic database. Does anyone know if _Books_In_Print_ is available in ,achine readable format? I wouldn't be surprised, since it already is distributed as microfiche. 2) I have considered saving reviews & using a keyword look-up system, but a: the automatic review-detector isn't easy to write (even saving everything posted by a Leeper doesn't work when they *dare* to post anything other than a review :-) :-) :-)! If people agreed to mark reviews in some special way (eg. with a "Keywords: review" line), it would at least be feasible, although I can't imagine people ever doing so. 3) when we have 14 Mbytes of 'Hienlien is Great/Crap/Misspelt', how to glean a review? Perhaps one should enquire of net.ai? 4) Interactive use of a 'book information' expert system is one thing; netwide access to an annotated bibliographic db is another. I am unconvinced that it can be "automagicated", although there's no reason why a user of the former couldn't post/mail its output. Would this be useful in any way? possibly. - Russell -- ... mcvax!ukc!warwick!req (req@warwick.UUCP) "If no small boy smeared with honey can be found, it may be necessary to take an ordinary small boy and smear him, which should be a pleasure."
