Now wait a minute... I dunno who from the VMS group handles the 10/20 to VMS integration sessions, but sounds like they were confused. At the SIR (System Improvement Request) session (where DEC responds to the SIRs that we as users voted on as the top ten most important) DEC made it quite clear that some sort of information archiving/retrieval system was something they were looking at both because of the TOPS integration issue and because of the importance that commercial shops put on this SIR. I think that a DEC response to this SIR at a DECUS SIR session is more likely to contain real information. Of course, they are in no way committed to providing such a beast based on that discussion, but the point I'm making is that someone in the VMS group knows about this and knows that people want it and is interested in doing something about it. Maybe if more people voted on the SIR's and went to the SIR sessions, DEC would have a better idea of what we want. /Kevin Carosso engvax!kvc @ CIT-VAX.ARPA Hughes Aircraft Co.

That comment was made at a TOPS-10/20 gripe session 3 DECI (DECUSES?) ago where they pulled some poor VMS guy into the room with 5 minutes notice. The VMS developers have said many times at subsequent DECI that they are indeed adressing this issue. The poor response at the meeting in question is (was) more a result of poor planning on the part of the DEC LCG organization who organized the session than it was an indication of VMS development ignorance. The timing of the message was bad. I originally sent that response quite a long time (over a year, when I was still working at SRI) ago. Since then, the VMS people have had archiving explained to them, and decided that maybe it sounds like a good idea. The DECUS where the "What's archiving" response was received WAS NOT the most recent decus in anaheim. I beleive it was the DECUS just after the DECUS where they anounced the jupiter cancelation.
