Ron Jarrell @ Va Tech Says: > Did anyone else notice that the 8200 and 8300 are the long awaited > microvax III? [...] Did anyone else get this impression. Our salesman specifically said that the 8200/8300 was NOT the uVax-III. He indicated that we should expect a major uVax announcement sometime this year. All of the ** RUMORS ** I have heard about the uVax-III don't mesh with the 8200 announcement. First off, the CPU has too many chips - the rumors say two chips for the -III; CPU and FPA. Secondly, the box size is wrong. I have heard stories placing the -III in a -II box - or smaller - along the lines of the Pro300/Rainbow+ desktop box. The price is also wrong. It seems to me that from a marketting standpoint, the next microvax product will have to give RT PC / Sun-160 performance in the $10,000 price range if DEC wants to be serious about the workstation market. Finally, though I would concede this one with no difficulty, the 8200 is not as powerful as the uVax-III is reported to be. The story I heard (from a friend of a friend of somebody in Vax Engineering) was that the -III will have approx 8600+ performance. I do believe that the 8200 is a replacement for the 11/780 and that the 8300 replaces the 11/785. Our salesman wanted to downplay that aspect - since we have 9 11/785's - and is trying to convince us that our 785's still have trade in value.
