[mod.computers.vax] Use of MOUNT/NOHIGHWATER to improve VMS ver 4 performance

charlie@ARI-HQ1 (02/18/86)

Several messages have appeared in this mailing list regarding the use of
the /NOHIGHWATER qualifier for mounting disk volumes so as to improve
performance under VMS version 4. The System Manager who considers taking
this measure to improve the performance of his system should be aware,
however, of the security implications of such an action. The high water
marking serves to deter disk scavenging attempts. Therefore, turning it
off can render sensitive data on the system subject to the possibility of
unauthorized disclosure. See the Guide to VAX/VMX System Security, and
understand thoroughly the implications of this action for your system, before
contemplating using it.
