OK, OK. Thanks to all who have sent me messages. It seems there must be at least one local$programs$area per site! Everyone has a different convention. My favourite was to call the directory whatever you want, and to make the programs look like they are on sys$system by modifying the search list. Thanks Tony Li. His message was CC Info-Vax so I won't repeat it. But based on the variety of replies I got, might it be reasonable for someone (DEC?) to suggest a common name and technique for local s/w? One of the biggest complaints I've lodged against *other* manufacturers *systems* is that while they can easily be tailored to look like whatever you want, the result is everyone does just that, and no 2 of the same system ever look the same. My experience with DEC (until now mostly TOPS) has been different. DEC s/w and operating systems are more unified than most (latest flames re EMACS notwithstanding). Should this, and perhaps some other areas, be pressed as needing *systemization* by DEC to catch up to the degree of consistency I've come to expect as *STANDARD* from this company? The other issue is help libraries. Thankyou thankyou thankyou. I guess I'm trying to juggle too much still. The technique is obvious; I just didn't know where to start looking. Thanks to everyone who flooded my mailbox. They are nearly all deleted, and far to many to ack separately. This net sure has easily opened floodgates.
