To all those elders and betters out there ... as a novice I could do with some help from you experienced VAX users. I need to produce an application system containing a number of time-critical processes (maybe 10), running in the real time priority range and communicating with each other via a combination of mail-boxes and shared memory. The system is required to be on the air 24 hours, 7 days .... At various times various people have made the following suggestions to me: i) start each process as an independant detached process. ii) start them all as sub-processes of a detached process. iii) start them all as sub-processes from a virtual terminal. iv) start them all as sub-processes from a batch task. My question is really - are there any hidden nasties behind any one of these solutions (which seem to me to be fairly equivalent) or am I free to choose on grounds of personal taste ? As performance considerations are of considerable importance I'm particularly interested in any overheads implied by these choices or in any aspects which might affect the 24 availablity of the system. Many thanks to those of you who devote any time to sending me your opinions....... N.
