[mod.computers.vax] VMS GNU Emacs, a status report

sasaki@HARVARD.HARVARD.EDU (Marty Sasaki) (06/20/86)

A new version of VMS GNU Emacs (version 17.VMS-4) is available via
anonymous FTP from Harvard. This should still be considered a test
version, but is much improved from the previous version announced in
this mailing list.

Sometime soon, Richard Stallman will release a version of GNU Emacs
(version 18) with VMS code completely integrated in it. I don't know
when this will happen, and don't know what it will look like, but the
port was done by Joe Kelsey and should be pretty good.

17.VMS-4 is available via anonymous FTP from harvard.harvard.edu. The
distribution has been divided up into savesets which have been
compressed and mapped onto printable ascii characters. Instructions
for decompressing and setting up the savesets are in the file
~ftp/vms/gnuemacs/README.

17.VMS-4 is also available to BITNET sites from Todd Aven
(AVEN@UMDHEP.BITNET). Contact Todd for more information.

17.VMS-4 is the work of Mukesh Prasad.

The compress/decompress program is a modification of Martin Minow's
port of the UNIX(R) compress program (whose lineage I'm not sure of).

If you have sent me a tape, I have either sent the tape out, or will
send it out by this weekend. Please don't send me any new tapes now, I
think it is best to wait for RMS's fully integrated GNU Emacs.
