[mod.computers.vax] VMS VAX --> PostScript

MKS@PS1.CS.CMU.EDU (08/06/86)

We need to be able to print bitmaps (from GKS) from MicroVaxes under VMS.
We are considering buying an Apple Laserwriter, which would require
PostScript files. Is there any available way to create PostScript files
on VMS Vaxes ? The alternative is buying a DEC LN03.
Please send replies to mks@h.cs.cmu.edu

DEC had a non-product printer, the PrintServer 40, on display at Dallas
DECUS. This product talked PostScript. I would assume that if DEC doesn't
have PostScript buried somewhere in 4.4, that all the hooks are there and
it will be in near future release. (4.7?)

For those who didn't see it, the 40 is (will be?) a 40 page/min. Ethernet
based printer. Well, in theory 40 ppm. I never saw the unit on the floor
running that fast. But it was being driven by an 11/???, so speed may be
constrained by that. The engine in Ricoh's new one. It's big, but holds
a lot of paper. I heard no speculation on price, but I'm sure it won't be
cheap.

Re: the LN03, it's not to great for graphics, but the newer LN03 Plus like
like it will solve most of the problems. I have an LN03 Plus on order, but
I have no experience yet.
