[mod.computers.vax] Memory capacity increase across VAX BI Line

CP.PAVER@MCC.COM (Bob Paver) (08/09/86)

For all of you who grumbled because 8500's could only be purchased with
20 meg of memory with no apparent expansion option...

The following is from a DEC press release I received today that announces
the 8550 and the 8700.

"Digital announced the availability of larger memory for all VAXBI systems.
Main memory for VAX 8200 and VAX 8300 systems can be expanded to 24 Mbytes
using the new 4 Mbyte arrays; utilizing new 16 Mbyte memory arrays, main
memory for the VAX 8500 and 8550 systems can be expanded to 80 Mbytes;
and the VAX 8700 and VAX 8800 systems can be expanded to 128 Mbytes with
the new 16 Mbyte arrays."

8500 memory upgrade pricing is not specifically mentioned, but memory
expansion for the 8550 and 8700 costs $48,000 for 32 Mbytes (two 16 Mbyte
arrays). You have to trade in two 4 Mbyte arrays to get that price.
Availability is 60-90 days. Not cheap, but cheaper than upgrades for the
8200 and 8300 which cost $12,900 for 4 Mbytes.
