Peter and interested others, Peter Van Schie (PETER @ HROEUR5) reported a problem with DECnet-DOS. I don't know if there is any connection but ... We received a MicroVAX II about 3 months ago. It had MicroVMS 4.1. One thing you need to do to use a dynamic asychronous DECnet link is to install SYS$LIBRARY:DYNSWITCH.EXE on both machines. It existed on our 785 (VMS v4.2) but wasn't to be found on the II. Called Colorado and after going through the layers of support was told must have 4.2 on both machines. They sent it for the II. Still no go. "What version of DECnet is on the II??" Version V04.000. "Oh ... you need V04.002" They sent it to me last week and now I can log onto the II but when I do a SET TERM/PROTOCOL=DDCMP/SWITCH=DECNET the connection hangs for a minute and then comes back with a ERROR MODIFYING DEVICE VTA1: DEVICE TIMED OUT One last call to the mountains. "There appears to be some problem. We have it under research" Anybody else out there having similer problems?? (If this has been discussed before, I apologize for duplication as I am new to INFO-VAX). GaryM. BITNET contact for UMKCVAXn (n=1, 3)

Additional things necessary for dynamic asynchronous Decnet: 1. You must load the driver NOA0. 2. The terminal that you issue the SET TERM/PROT=DDCMP/SWITCH=DECNET must be enabled to be a virtual terminal. 3. You need to setup the transmit/receive passwords for the nodes involved. 4. You need to set the INCOMING parameter for the node you are connecting to. See the updated (for 4.2) guide to networking for more details. Also there is some documentation in the Micro-Vms manuals. Note, I am still having some problems with asynch decnet -- see my note from a few days ago. (I still have to wiggle the passwords). Does anyone have experience getting "Dialup Dynamic Asynchronous DECnet" to work? I am trying to get a MicroVAX (VMS V4.2) to communicate with an 11/780 (VMS V4.2) by this method with no success. I've followed the instructions in "Guide to Networking on VAX/VMS", pages 5-14 thru 5-16 and 5-25 thru 5-27, but get a "device timeout" error after I enter the "SET TERMINAL/PROTOCOL=DDCMP /SWITCH=DECNET" command.
