[mod.computers.vax] Request for DECnet/SNA VMS Remote Job Entry experiences.

PRINS@HLERUL5.BITNET (R. Prins - Network Mgr. [DEC Sites] RU Leiden) (09/05/86)

I would like to know experiences of other people with DECnet/SNA VMS
Remote Job Entry.
At the Leiden University the software runs on eight VAX computers and
two DECnet/SNA Gateways (DECSA) connecting to a MVS machine (JES2).
The problem is that the RJE software doesn't run very reliably from a
VMS- environment (that is the only environment in which we run RJE).
Other SNA Gateway products like 3270 TE, DDXF and DHCF work fine.
We use two SNA Gateways, each running four RJE workstations (which is
the maximum for a SNA Gateway) together with other Gateway software.
The symptoms of our problems are the following:

- Random downs of workstations. The RJE workstation has to be restarted
manually or even to be reconfigured again.
- Random crashes of SNARJEMPX in the VAX. SNARJEINI.COM must be executed
  again.
- A hangup condition in the SNA Gateway. Task RJS... in the Gateway has
four links, of which three are in Tx or Rx state and one hangs in Mb
state (which shouldn't occur according to DEC).
- A condition in the network. Symptoms are that according to the
VAX there are more links to the SNA Gateway (from task SNARJEMPX)
than according to the SNA Gateway.

The frequency isn't large; random downs of workstations occur a couple
of times each week and the other problems occur a couple of times each
month, but as manual intervention of an operator each time is required
the problem is a nuisance.

we have temporarily solved the problem of random downs of workstations
to reconfigure the RJE workstations each quarter of an hour using a batch
job, but this has another restriction: only one task SNARJE can be active
at a time otherwise hangups may occur.

I would be pleased to hear of your experience with this software.
