[mod.computers.vax] 4.4 Documentation Binders

A105@UWOCC1.BITNET (Brent Sterner) (08/18/86)

OK, OK. Perhaps my brain is hemorrhaging. But I've discovered the
most amazing phenomenon. The orange binders distributed with 4.4 are
*BIGGER* than they used to be! Let me explain.
My shelf space is fixed and limited. Those pumpkin books take a *LOT*
of space, and so I've been acutely aware of the size limitations of my
shelf space for a long long time. Today I was looking at something in
one of the 4.4 binders, and absently went to place it on my shelf (it
still belongs in the box until after the upgrade). It would not fit!
Closer inspection reveals the following:
      Shelf height 11 5/8"
      VAX VMS 4.2 binder height 11 9/16"
      VAX VMS 4.4 binder height 11 11/16"
I'll be the 1st to admit that is pretty close, and that good planning
should have allowed for s/w expansion, but how could I have anticipated
THIS? Is this a truly Canadian phenomenon, or does it affect all of GIA?
Or is it a truly global DIGITAL corporate ploy to sell more DECshelves
*tm*. Or did I quaff a few too many at lunch?
Any and all suggestions/remarks/cures will be appreciated. Thanks in
advance.

PS Perhaps a binder exchange BOF should be organized for SF DECUS.
Anyone want to buy/sell/swap binders in California? Could be
       *THE* event of the symposium!

Yes Brent

I to have noticed that the binders are noticably larger. I did not like the
appearance of the height variation so moved all of the new binders to the
start of the sequence of binders. I however did not have the problem that you
have mentioned as I have always been afraid that the extremely varying office
temperatures would result in the coefficent of expansion of the binders
resulting in a stuck binder that I could not get off the shelf.

I was most interested in the fact that a Canadian (where I thought they had
converted 100% to metric) has a ruler delineated in inches.
See you in S.F.
