[mod.computers.vax] Modestly interesting items in the DECUS world...

EVERHART%ARISIA%rca.com@RELAY.CS.NET (09/18/86)

I just got some DECUS library updates and thought I'd pass one or
two on...
DECUS # VAX-174 is a whole set of PLA tools from Berkeley; looks like
a complete system for designing PLAs, plus manuals.
Manual code is EB, tape (600') is code MA, VMS Backup format.

DECUS # VAX-181 is a VT200 toolkit with font editing, dithering, key defs,
new character set files and more. Media code MA (600' Ansi tape).

DECUS # VAX-180 is V2 of the Parallel Library DEC spoke of at the last
DECUS symposium for writing parallel code. Media is 600' tape (MA),
Backup format.

DECUS # VAX-183 is Mike Levine's JUICER program. This is an inplace disk
compression facility for ODS-2 plus a bunch more utilities. Order
code is MA (600' tape), Ansi format. This looks like it could make it
unnecessary to buy the $3000 or so commercial disk squeezer... and given
Mike's track record (look at INDEX sometime if you want a really FINE
static analyzer for Fortran) it should be an excellent item.

The above should be sufficient info to order from the Library.
I intend to...

By the way, I just got my virtual disk driver VDDRIVER working
yesterday. It's a bit crude but will let you use contiguous files as
volumes on a VAX/VMS system, just like the old RSX VD: driver. Handy
for multiple cluster factors, handling foreign file structures (or
keeping some ODS-1 things around without dedicating a whole RA81...),
or providing a place for reading in tapes off other sites. I find it
lots easier to read a tape onto a virtual disk, pick off what I want,
and then just delete the container file when done. I've been using
a commercial driver but want to have a more portable toolset, which
required writing my own. I expect it'll get on the SIG tapes next time.
If anyone wants to help distribute it and knows how a MAILnet site like
mine can do so, I'd be inclined to help and send them a copy. I don't
want to copy dozens of folks though, to avoid swamping our system.
The package could use some smoothing of rough edges (noted in the
manual file).
