MAIL>PRINT ... We are running VMS version 4.3 and 4.4 and within the MAIL utility we noticed something kind of bothersome ... when you PRINT a mail message and EXIT from Mail the output is sent to SYS$PRINT. Standard operation. Since you can't initialize a generic print queue, (we tried it), with the /DEFAULT=(FLAG) qualifier and a few others, the message ends up getting sent to a device associated with the generic queue without a /FLAG qualifier and so the printed Mail message has no flag page. This makes it difficult to distribute printouts to users when there are lots of jobs to sort through. So ... we thought to try setting the generic queue to /FLAG, Yeah, yeah it's not supposed to work according to the the documentation, (VAX/VMS System Manager's Reference Manual p. 9-44), which states: The /DEFAULT, /FORM_MOUNTED, and /SEPARATE qualifiers are not meaningful for generic output queues. Consequently, the DCL commands INITIALIZE/QUEUE and START/QUEUE will reject these qualifiers if /GENERIC is also specified. If the attributes of an established generic output queue are modified, these three qualifiers may be accepted. however, they have no effect on the operation of the generic queue. Ha! It's true that you can't initialize a generic queue with a /DEFAULT=(FLAG) but you can set the queue "SET QUEUE/DEFAULT=(FLAG) SYS$PRINT" with the same and it does take it and it DOES have an effect!!! Looking at the queue using SHOW QUEUE/FULL SYS$PRINT does not show the /DEFAULT=(FLAG) but try printing from mail or printing to SYS$PRINT - the flag page is there.
