[mod.computers.vax] Efficiency of code from VMS compilers

halko@NADC.ARPA (10/24/86)

We will be developing software to run on a VAX 11/785 (VMS) as part
of a large real-time system. Does anyone have any information regarding
the efficiency of the code generated by DEC's VMS compilers, specifically
FORTRAN, Pascal, C, and Ada. We are particularly interested in such
things as high-level instruction to machine instuction ratios, size of
executable images, overhead, compiler options for more efficiency,
specific problem areas, etc.

In the past, we have developed small real-time systems in Pascal.
Lately we've heard some negative opinions of VAX Pascal, so
we're investigating whether to implement all or part of the system in
some other language.

Any information or pointers to related reports, articles, or documents
will be greatly appreciated. Please respond directly to me and I will
summarize to the net.

				           Thanks in advance,
