[mod.computers.vax] JNET username mapping problem

A105@UWOCC1.BITNET (Brent Sterner) (11/12/86)

Ooops, we just got JNET here. Some of our users, for accounting
purposes, have usernames which were derived form TOPS-10 account ppns,
and look like p_pn, where p is a 5 character octal number and pn is
a 4 character octal number. This means we have usernames of 10
characters, 2 longer than IBM systems use. JNET has a serious problem
translating these (it can't, so it truncates).
How do you resolve this? It is a serious limitation for this site.
No we cannot easily map several thousand accounts to use shorter names.
One possible solution might be to map the username during sends and
receives. Is there any utility which would allow a username change while
a user is logged on? If so, sends and receives could be performed within
a shell which did the pre and post conversion (although I personally
dislike the concept).
Please send suggestions directly to me, and I'll summarize. Thanks.
