Hi again, I would like to get some information on the tektronix version of TCP/IP. I am told that it is offered to educational institutions free of charge, however there is no support. Our site is currently running DECnet and lock manager over Ethernet (through a DEUNA). At the moment we are all VAX/VMS machines, but two of our users have purchased SUN-3 workstations which they would like to put on the Ethernet, and our group is also considering buying one to use for offloading heavy number-crunching (the FPA is really fast). We have two communications options: 1. Buy DECnet for the SUNs (it appears to be a port of DECnet/ULTRIX) or 2. Buy TCP to run on the VAXes. In the case of the second alternative, the best-known version seems to be Wollongong's WIN/VX. However, this is *EXTREMELY* expensive and, I am told, the support is not as good as it should be. The alternative appears to be the tektronix package. Is anybody out there running it? If so, what sort of experiences have you had with it, i.e. how well does it perform and how much trouble has it been? We are not a real hacking site, since we only have 2 full-time people (including me) to manage our 7 computers. Alternatively, has anyone had experience with SUN DECnet? Does it work as they claim? Please send your replies directly to me (SYSRUTH@UTORPHYS on BITNET). I will post the outcome to the net for everybody's benefit. Many thanks in advance. P.S. If it takes me a while to respond, it's because I have 85 INFOVAX messages already waiting to be read and sometimes have trouble finding time to read the constant flood (although they are well worth it when I finally get around to it).
