Hi All, I posted this message a few weeks ago, but it never seemed to have made it out on the network (at least, I never recieved my copy). If this s the second time you've seen this, please drop me a note so I can notify our local mailer person. Some time ago, I posted a few questions regarding a uVax II network I helped design. Because of numerous delays associated with the installation of the network, I have refrained from posting an update; my apologies for the time-lapse. Although all of the uVax boards are either not in (waiting for a vendor) or not software loaded, many terminals are up. I will post a summary of network performance when the entire configuration is installed and is operational. This will probably not occur before January. Here's the current situation: At the risk of being dubbed dull and full of redundancy, here is the original message: ** I've helped design a uVax II network on campus and have run into ** difficulties. Due to renovation dalays, we've had to consider ** a **temporary** redesign. ** Two uVax II's are to be networked over an Ethernet. Due to the ** aforementioned renovation delays, only one uVax is to be ** installed and will be up-and-running for some time before the ** second unit. The first unit is now supposed to have the ** following boards in it: ** 1 x Deqna-M ** 1 x DHV-11-AP ** 1 x CS02/HA ** 2 x DPV-11-AP ** The two DPV-11 boards are to be used for a BITNET and a 3270 ** emulation connection. Looks good up to the two DPV-11's, right? ** According to the "Vax Systems and Options Catalog," April-June ** 1986, p. 1.121, 2.3 Networking Hardware Options, one is to ** "choose only one networking option per system" in regards the ** Deqna-M and the DPV11-M. I can't seem to find information on ** whether or not a Deqna-M can be combined with one or more DPV-11-AP's. ** DEC engineers claim that there's no problem with the proposed configuration. ** Can one run a Deqna-M and two DPV-11-AP boards on the same uVax II? ** Is there anything odd about the configuration? The first uVax II has **finally** been installed and is running, even though the CS02/HA board (a 16 line Emulex board) has not been installed. Six terminals are connected to the DHV-11 and another six tubes are connected to a DecServer-100 via a Delni. One DPV-11 board is connected via Gandalf LDS 309 modems to a Comten 3690 and into an IBM 3083. This last connection allows, at any given moment, up to seven terminals on the uVax to emulate IBM 3270's. Athough the DPV-11 is capable of handling up to thirty-two terminal emulations at a time, the remaining memory on our Comten 3690 will not permit such an indulgance. The second DPV-11 board, to be used as a BITNET connection, is awaiting a software load on the uVax. It is hoped that this will happen soon. Although I had some concern about two DPV-11 boards on one uVax, I was informed that the configuration is valid. When we bring the second DPV on-line, I will let one and all know how the system is running after it's up for a little while. Again, sorry for taking so long to post this; and, thanks for the advice. -- Bernie Chowdhury Columbia University Data Communications Group -------
