We have been doing something similar for several months with no bad effects. We start a batch job during boot to rebuild all of our disks. This minimizes accesses to the disk before they are rebuilt. At the SF DECUS a developer mentioned that there appears to be a problem with SET VOL/REB in certain odd circumstances. The developers don't seem to fully understand what's happening, but it does, on rare occassion, result in large pieces of the disk "disappearing".
