[mod.computers.vax] UNIX tapes under VMS

ROTONDI@IBACSATA.BITNET.UUCP (12/12/86)

Hello VAXers,
is there anyone who has a program, under VAX/VMS,
for UNIX tapes in TAR format?
Is it possible to have the source code (preferred languages
are: FORTRAN, PASCAL or C language)?

Thanks in advance

Ciao

This question gets asked frequently on this list. The answer is, there
are a few TAR reader programs on the various DECUS Symposium tapes.
John Gilmore (I think) has recently posted a complete tar to the
USENET group mod.sources, and while it hasn't been ported to VMS yet,
there aren't that many UNIXisms in it, it should be relatively easy to
port.

This question reminds me of an idea that I had. Wouldn't it be neat (I
use words like "gee" and "keen" too) if someone would maintain an
"info-vax" software repository, sort of like the Ada and micro
libraries? I would volunteer to administer such a thing, but I don't
have access to a machine where we could maintain a lot of more or less
static storage. That way when someone asks a question like "Does
anyone have a TAR reader on VMS", we can respond, "It's in the
repository..."

Another idea that I had was to make an info-vax submission to the
DECUS Symposium tape. This would include stuff that got submitted,
interesting articles, etc.

Oh well, enough off the wall ideas...
