At the recent DECUS in San Francisco, we were told that VMS 4.5 would start shipping sometime in November or December. So it will be more than "a few more days". -- Gail Walker

We received VMS 4.5 from DEC a couple of weeks ago and are wondering if we should install it or just sit on the tape until 4.6. I was told at the Fall DECUS that 4.6 is also a maintenance release. This tells me that probably either (a) most of the stuff in 4.5 is stuff they needed to get out quick for new processors, etc; (b) there are problems in 4.5, not bad enough to call it back, but bad enough to require a quick 4.6; or (c) both of the above. Now, 4.4 is working fine for us (except for a couple of problems with new features in the debugger) so my question to the net is: does anyone out there really know what is fixed in 4.5 and what is newly busted in 4.5? Please e-mail responses to me. I will summarize to the net. My uucp address is ...!ucbvax!mtxinu!blia!ted (or mtxinu!blia!ted@Berkeley.EDU from arpanet). Thanks in advance. P.S. My system is a very plain 750, no CI and no DSA disks.

In an earlier message I asked for information on what VMS 4.5 fixed and broke. I guess I wasn't clear enough. Please, no more mail saying "read the release notes!". I did read them before posting and I find the comment "fixed misc. bugs in DCL" to be singularly useless (though I must admit that I missed the serious RMS bugs). Anyway, to clarify my request: please e-mail me any information on fixes in VMS 4.5 beyond what is in the release notes. Also, if any of you have installed 4.5 and found new problems, please include them. Thanks again to all. =============================================================================== Ted Marshall Britton Lee, Inc. p-mail: 14600 Winchester Blvd, Los Gatos, Ca 95030 voice: (408)378-7000 uucp: ...!ucbvax!mtxinu!blia!ted ARPA: mtxinu!blia!ted@Berkeley.EDU disclaimer: These opinions are my own and may not reflect those of my employer; I leave them alone and they leave me alone. fortune for today: Usage: fortune -P [] -a [xsz] [Q: [file]] [rKe9] -v6[+] dataspec ... inputdir
