[mod.computers.vax] re query about 20/20, all-in-1

Eric Fanwick asked about spreadsheets under VMS and trying to make the
command set more like 1-2-3...
As an alternative, check out Decus # V-SP-24, AnalytiCalc.
The latest version contains VMS, RSX, and MS-DOS versions, all completely
compatible (and with sources, yet).
There is a lot more (a dbms, some communications, virtual disk
drivers for VMS and RSX, calendar utilities, and more) on the tape (it's
a full 1600BPI 2400 foot reel).
Read the AAINSTALL.COM file in one of the early savesets for a guide
on VMS installation...
It has a highly tailorable command language which, while not
strictly 1-2-3 compatible, is not too foreign in flavor if you use the
"enter-mostly" mode of operation. Address space is 18000 by 18000 on PC,
32000 by 32000 on VAX and the price is right...
Of course, if you MUST use the high priced PC spreadsheet, go look
at 20/20 to see...
I suspect though that any significant functional enhancements over
1-2-3 are highly constrained by a requirement to have identical commands.
AnalytiCalc has numerous concepts and commands that go beyond 1-2-3 in
function (as I suspect many VAX sheets might) and would be quite cramped
if it had to conform to the 1-2-3 command mold.
DECUS can be phoned at 617 480 3419 for ordering info; there's
a copy fee to make a tape, but it's no higher than most places that
charge copy fees for 2400' reels...
