The "Extra" files you will most likely find are loger messages.
(Longer doesn't seem to be *very* long)
I'd recomend doing a ...
MAIL> SET MAIL_DIRECTORY [.MAIL]
That way the files won't be cluttering up your major directory. Mail
will create the sub-directory, and move all your files into it.
