[mod.computers.vax] Printserver-40 Software

JMS@ARIZMIS.BITNET (01/23/87)

Info-VAX Folks, and Printserver-40 owners in particular:
With your printserver 40 (LPS40) comes a little piece of
software (a symbiont) that Digital provides to assist the PRINT command in
talking to the new piece of hardware. In this little package is
a bit of software of vital interest to me, a Text-to-Postscript
converter.
For those of you unfamiliar with the problem, you cannot
simply issue PRINT commands to Postscript printers; they will not
put up with such nonsense. In order to properly use your Postscript
printer, you need to convert ordinary TEXT into Postscript commands.
Digital insists that this code will get integrated into VMS
according to normal timetables. This means, I interpret, within
a year or so, since that's how long it takes to put something new into
VAX/VMS. However, in the interim, they refuse to sell me just the
software, since it's not a product. Printers are products; if I
want the software, I gotta buy the printer.
Our local office is of no help, naturally. So, I put the
question to you: (1) does it look like the software is licensed? That
is, does it appear that you signed an agreement (either implicitly
or explicitly) NOT to use that software on multiple CPUs ? I'm not
talking about the LPS40 resident stuff, just the part that sits on
the VAX to replace the print symbiont. (2) If you, in good faith, believe
that the software is NOT licensed, would you be willing to send a
copy to me ? or (3) If you think it is licensed, would you be willing
to send me a copy, if my local office told your local office that it
was OK? and (4) has anyone else out there solved this problem so that
I don't have to all over again.
We are not unwilling to pay for the software; Digital is simply
unwilling to sell it to us (well, not true. If we buy the software for
$40K, they will even throw in a LPS40).
Thanks in advance for any help,

Joel

if you get a positive response, I might apreciate a copy.. there are these people
around here who want their apple printer as a remote... We are officialy trying to
discourage them, as we dont want even more of the slow things around, but...
