[mod.computers.vax] problems with GPX Vaxstation II

aharon@wisdom.BITNET.UUCP (01/27/87)

Hi. We just got a new Color GPX Vaxstation and we are having a
tremendous number of problems. Unfortunately, squeezing information
out of Dec Software Support here in Israel is a slow and painful
process. The documentation has proved less than useless.
So let's see what you wizards out there can come up with:

First, we have 5 mbytes on the machine with two RD53's (the second
sitting on an Andromeda controller). I have set all the reasonable
parameters I could think of as high as possible given the limitations
of disk and memory (pagefil, swapfil each ~ 30,000 bytes, wsext of 6k)
Performance, to say the least, stinks. We can hang the system with ease.
Some monitoring of performance leads to the follwoing observations:

(1) We can not have more than 6 windowsat one time
(2) Certain operations (e.g. scrolling a text window which overlaps
a graphics window, or sending a window of the screen - partially) causes
a large number of LRP requests which causes the system to drag to
a halt.
(3) When using sements in our programs, empty segments (w/o private data)
require 2K each!!!!! Any reasonable usage of segments causes our
system to sit 95% of the time in PFW since they demand such a large
amount of memory.
(4) Quicly movinga graphics window often causes it to leave "stuff"
behind.

Is there something we're missing here? How should I set my sysgen
parameters so I get reasonable performance? How do I get UIS
to use less (much less!!) memory per segment?

I have of course avoided mentioning all the bugs we have discovered
in UIS. My feeling is that DEC has released a beta-site version
of the WS software, in order to quickly come to market with a
workstation product. (yes, we have the latest version of all WS
software).

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(one last question - anyone know how you can prevent someone
from moving a window - i.e. have a permanently placed window?)

Thanks
