We have a microVaxII in our Elec. Engg. department and want to connect it to BITNET. We are looking at a very low cost way of doing it. There is a Vax Unix site which is connected to BITNET. There is also an IBM machine connected to BITNET on our campus. There is nobody here who is conversant with system programming in VMS. There seem to be two choices. Any help by experienced system people in suggesting the right choice will be very much appreciated. 1. We can use VAX (unix) as an intermediate path to go to IBM (VM) and get connected to BITNET. Are there any mailing programs (in pd or very inexpensive) which can be used for this purpose on VMS and their counterparts on Unix? We are interested in being able to receive both text files and binary files (like .EXE and .BCK) on BITNET. The only software I heard of is a cobination of PMDF on vms and MMDF on Unix. Will this work as expected for receiving the binary files from a JNET site? 2. The other alternative is to use the IBM as the link. Discounting the the straight forward alternative of JNET software and the needed hardware (because of its cost), the choice we have is to use a DUV-11 and a software we can get for testing purpose as collaborators. But the problem here is the absence of a driver routine. I do not know any place where I can get a driver for it. Is it simple to write a driver for it for a novice in VMS? Any help in this regrad from experienced people in the netland will be highly appreciated. K. Sankara Rao BITNET : nu043109@ndsuvm1
