[mod.computers.vax] Problem with BACKUP

STRASSER@seismo.CSS.GOV@RSBS0.anu.OZ.AU (02/18/87)

I missed the original posting and only saw someone's reply, but I think
the problem was the apparent "loss" of a backed-up save set, because its
name was too long.

I've had this problem, which is due to the ANSI tape standard limiting
file names to a total of 17 characters (I think), while VMS 4+ can have
much longer names (39.39 I think). Unfortunately, BACKUP doesn't check
this, and tries to write a long file name to tape, while (if you're
journalling) writing the correct long name to the journal file.

I found what the file is called on the tape by mounting the tape as a
FILES-11 volume (i.e. not /FOREIGN) and doing a DIR of it. BACKUP was
then able to find the save set with that name.
