I missed the original posting and only saw someone's reply, but I think the problem was the apparent "loss" of a backed-up save set, because its name was too long. I've had this problem, which is due to the ANSI tape standard limiting file names to a total of 17 characters (I think), while VMS 4+ can have much longer names (39.39 I think). Unfortunately, BACKUP doesn't check this, and tries to write a long file name to tape, while (if you're journalling) writing the correct long name to the journal file. I found what the file is called on the tape by mounting the tape as a FILES-11 volume (i.e. not /FOREIGN) and doing a DIR of it. BACKUP was then able to find the save set with that name.
