has anyone tried gnu emacs for vms. What is the speed like, what are the space requirements. Are all the features there,i.e. lisp, dired, mail. Are there modes for fortran, pascal, ada. Or is there an emacs written in vax tpu, and if so is it available thanks. Chris Lee Cmlee@Nswc-wo

--Line eater The current version of EMACS (18.3X) available from MIT-PREP has VMS support #ifdef'd into it. I believe everything works just as it does on Unix, with the few necessary diffences required by VMS. For instance, I don't believe subprocesses work very well. You may want to re-ask your question to VMS-GNU-EMACS@ HARVARD.AP HARVARD.ARPA (Marty Sasaki).

The current version of EMACS (18.3?) available on MIT-PREP does not really work on VMS yet. There are problems having to do with memory allocation and garbage collection (I think). There is a version that works available for FTP from harvard. It is based on 17.61, but has several known bugs. Many feel that these bugs make it unusable, but I use it all of the time. The currently working version is in ~ftp/vms/gnuemacs and is available via anonymous FTP. Look at the README file before doing the copy. ---------------- Marty Sasaki uucp: harvard!sasaki Strategic Information arpa: sasaki@harvard.harvard.edu 80 Blanchard Road bitnet: sasaki@harvunxh Burlington, MA 01803 phone: 617-273-5500

Could some BITNETer please send me the latest and greatest Emacs for VMS? We have two uVaxen here, with no outside world connection aside from a DECNET link to a BITNET node, so we are kind of cut off... Send to STEVEG@MECAN1.BITNET <VmsDump format>. /Steve Goldsmith University Of Maine

I would like to establish a common editor for all machines that I work with. I have EMACS for my UNIX and MSDOS machines, but not the MicroVax running VMS. Does anyone know of a binary version of EMACS (I don't have a C compiler) for VMS. Another alternative might be VI if it exists for VMS. Please respond directly--I'm not on this list. Thanks, Jim Weikert WEIKERT@NADC.ARPA
