Could somebody tell me how to prevent the <LOGIN> process from springing
up on a certain port on VMS (4.?)?

At least two ways
1)ALLOCATE the port
2)Set the PORT as non-interactive (several ways to do this - read
SET TERMINAL to pick the one you want for your application)
