I'd like to get opinions from people who have recently acquired new thrid- party disks/controllers for their Unibus VAXen running VMS. I've been looking into getting some new disks for our unclustered 780's and would like to know of other people experiences. Given that there seems to be a whole new generation of disk technology becoming available, its hard to make an informed judgement. Specific topics of concern: - Has anybody installed the new Emulex/CDC XMDII drives. (700+MB per spindle, about $12K per disk) Emulex is pushing this really hard, and CDC is claiming very long MTBF and a 3 yr head warranty. - Same for the new SI/Fuji combo (690MB per disk, 8" drive "Swallow") - Anyone know anything about the new Hitachi, NEC drives, especially who to talk to to get them? Thanks for any info. I'll summarize to the net if I get sufficient response. Dave Serafini Sterling Software/ NASA Ames Research Center Applied Aerodynamics Branch
