DEC are currently enhancing mail functionality, in general, on VMS ..BUT.. the enhancements are appearing as additional layered products e.g. ALL-IN-1, VAXnotes, DECMAIL, X400,etc. I'd like to see funtionality in the standard VMS mail which enables me to manipulate, AND READ, many mail messages a day - when my main function isn't to read mail. I currently receive so much mail that I often have to simply read and DELETE/PRINT messages rather than figure out which folder to put them in and then place them there. I'd like the ability to file mail according to keywords in the subject or 'from' fields BEFORE reading as well as after reading. I'd also like to be able to 'mark' mail for reading later. The ability to redefine the layout of the mail DIR output would also be useful to allow for longer 'from' fields and subject fields,etc. It might be too much to expect standard VMS mail to at least support the basic features of network mail ( X400? ) i.e. to recognise the standard formats of network mail fields - perhaps that's asking for too much?
