[mod.computers.vax] BRU reading under VMS

To read BRU tapes under VMS you first need VAX/RSX, some version.
Then use the BRU utility that's in that package. To read onto an
ODS-2 disk from BRU tapes, pre-create the directories (in the
MFD) that you'll need, with desired ownership. You may well need
bypass privs to get file ownerships created as in the originals.
You should make SURE however that you have LOG_IO and PHY_IO
privs turned OFF in your process, to guard against any brain damage
that may otherwise occur. Just tell bru /NOINI as one of its'
switches also and it'll create files quite happily.
Creating BRU tape on VMS is trickier; you need an ODS-1
disk volume. I'd suggest the VDDRIVER package I put on the fall '86
VAX SIG tapes as a useful tool in that case; you can make a virtual
disk the size you need and IT can be ODS-1 while the bulk of your
disk storage remains ODS-2.
