I got quite a few responses to my question regarding using Hayes compatible modems with the SET HOST/DTE command. I also got quite a few requests for any answers that I got, so I am posting a summary. I am told that there is an article in the February 1987 (V1 #9) issue of "The VAX prfessional" that has about 40 lines of code in it that will modify the DF03 dial-out code. Unfortunately, someone in my department seems to have walked away with that particular issue. Of course that person might have been me. :-) The other solution I got was to simply execute the SET HOST/DTE command and then type in the ATDT command at the keyboard. This is probably a satifactory answer for me most of the time. As it turns out, the basic problem I was having was a case of multiple autobauding. The Hayes compatible modem that I have in smart enough to autobaud what it gets from either side and decide whether to talk 110, 300, or 1200 baud. Because of this I set the terminal line to autobaud also. This works fine for dial-in, but is not so hot for dial-out. What you get is the modem and VAX sitting there autobauding at each other. Needless to say, my ATDT commands never made it through to the modem. Once I realised this, I set up a command procedure to disable autobauding on the line and set it to 1200 baud and then execute the SET HOST/DTE command, then set it back to autobaud afterward. Things are working much better now. If anyone has gone to the trouble to type in the code from the VAX professional issue, I would appreciate it if you would send it to me. I'm not sure if I will ever find my issue. Thanks again for all the responses. Alan Sutter (ALAN@FANDM.BITNET) Franklin and Marshall College Lancaster, PA 17604 (717) 291-4005
