Concerning Mark Cooperstein's question of whether to use /NOCRC on MicroVAX IIs with a TK50 as the BACKUP output medium, I recall a session at the Dallas DECUS with DEC Storage Group personnel discussing 'how fast our tape drives go'. They felt that since the TK50 handles CRC in hardware, /NOCRC *was* justified. Those who wrote BACKUP (in another session) disagreed. Personally, I would use /NOCRC since the performance gain is so great I could run a /VERIFY on every tape written in less time (for /IMAGE backups, for example). For non-image backups, your potential data loss is much less, so the risk isn't as high. Of course, my employer is more paranoid than I am, so we *always* use /CRC. david l. bolthouse texas instruments defense electronics information systems VAX system support mckinney, texas ma bell: 214.952.2059 csnet: bolthouse%mccore@ti-eg arpa: bolthouse%mccore@ti-eg.csnet disclaimer: my employer runs 'two or three' VAXes. if we were to lose data, we would be in deep trouble. if i lose data, that's not such a big deal.
