When a user logs on (and he has new mail) then the system beeps him with a message "TWO NEW MAIL MESSAGES" (or the equivalent thereof). What I want to know is where this number is stored. I tried to modify the program SYS$EXAMPLES:MAILUAF.COM to print out the messages. However I wasn't able hack it to do so. Two possibilities present itself: 1) I'm not rewriting SYS$EXAMPLES:MAILUAF.COM correctly and therefore I cannot get the information. 2) The information is stored elsewhere so step 1) (above) will get me nowhere. I will be happy if anyone can shed any light on this matter. Samir Chettri (chettri@udel-dewey.edu)

THe number of new mail messages is indeed stored in the VMSMAIL.DAT file. The format of this file is detailed in an SDL file in the MAIL section of the VMS microfiche. I also seem to remember that the SHOW command of MAILUAF.COM will list the number of new mail messages for a user (along with lots of other information).
