[mod.computers.vax] SET HOST/DTE vs VAXNET

EVERHART%ARISIA@rca.COM.UUCP (04/06/87)

I just got VAXnet V12 from the DECUS library. Rather than using
set host/dte, use VAXnet. You not only avoid some of the cruft
that comes of funny record formats, it handles VAXNET, XMODEM, and
KERMIT protocols for you and is fairly easy on the system in terminal
emulator mode (unlike Kermit which will bring a system to its knees
rather easily during terminal emulation (but not during file transfer)).
The resulting log files tend to be internal carriage control,
which a pass through TECO will turn into something the rest of VMS
will be generally happier with. Or you can use the REFormat utility
that would be fired up automagically...
VAXNET V12 no longer sets implied carriage control bits on
binary files, and supports Kermit and has numerous security enhancements.
Hats off to Robin Miller, the author and supplier.
