[mod.computers.vax] DEMPR/Thin Ethernet multiport repeaters

ROODE%BIONET@SUMEX-AIM.STANFORD.EDU.UUCP (04/11/87)

I notice the latest Digital Review mentions Cabletron as an alternate
source of DEMPR-equivalents, and says DEC has a many month lead time
on the transceiver needed to use a DEMPR, after having a long lead
time on DEMPR's themselves for a long time.

We used 3 Hewlett Packard Thin LAN Hubs with success as DEMPR
replacements when DEC was quoting 4 month to unspecified lead times.
The HP product only has 4 ports, but the ports aren't internally
terminated allowing you to connect 2 segments to each port, although
of reduced length. The HP product is the same as the DEC in price but
includes a transceiver. If you have already got a transceiver you can
delete the transceiver as an option and save $500 on the price. The
HP product has nice mounting brackets to affix it to the wall in your
cable closet.

DEMPR is probably a DEC trademark.
